From Dalian to Palo Alto: Building Technology That Ships
I'm Micheal (蒋圣帛), an international student from Dalian, Liaoning, China, currently studying at The Kehillah Jewish High School in Palo Alto. Born on March 24, 2009, I care about craft, measurable impact, and closing the loop between research and real users.
I co-founded ReMatter and shipped Releaf — Ultimate Sustainability to the App Store. This iOS product helps people turn intent into daily environmental action, featuring a clean SwiftUI frontend with a resilient Django/FastAPI backend, real-time carbon tracking, and community challenges.
As Tech Sub-Lead for CarbonTrack, I operated like a player-coach—prioritizing roadmaps, building features, and auditing performance budgets. As Tech Lead for iGEM LCG-China 2024, I designed a SQL-backed data pipeline for wet-lab experiments. Our team won Gold.
Currently, I'm a high school intern at Athena AI Lab in Palo Alto, focused on advanced software engineering while building two AI systems: a multimodal sign-language translation system and Astrobio-Gen, a physics-informed transformer for astrobiology predictions.

Developed an innovative CNN/RNN/transformer hybrid architecture that revolutionizes accessibility through real-time sign language translation technology. This sophisticated system ingests video streams with optional audio input and renders precise 3D stick-figure avatars for immediate, accurate translation output. The solution is fully containerized and WebRTC-ready, specifically designed for edge acceleration to minimize latency and maximize accessibility. The multimodal approach leverages computer vision for gesture recognition, natural language processing for context understanding, and advanced 3D rendering for clear visual output. Key technical innovations include optimized neural network architectures for mobile deployment, efficient data preprocessing pipelines, and robust error handling for various lighting conditions. Astrobio-Gen
Engineered a groundbreaking surrogate-transformer stack that combines meticulously curated astronomical catalogs with sophisticated simulation priors to advance astrobiology research and hypothesis generation. This innovative system features transformer surrogates that approximate computationally expensive astrophysical models at orders-of-magnitude lower computational cost, while maintaining scientific accuracy and reliability. The architecture incorporates advanced LLM orchestration for intelligent data validation, comprehensive uncertainty quantification, and automated hypothesis generation that accelerates scientific discovery processes. Key technical achievements include physics-informed neural networks that respect fundamental astrophysical constraints, efficient data fusion algorithms, and robust uncertainty propagation methods. The platform enables researchers to explore parameter spaces that would be computationally prohibitive with traditional simulation methods, democratizing access to advanced astrobiological modeling capabilities and accelerating the search for life beyond Earth.
iGEM LCG-China Data System
Led comprehensive web stack development and designed a sophisticated SQL-backed data treatment pipeline for wet-lab experiment management that became instrumental in our team's Gold medal achievement at the international iGEM competition. This robust system standardized metadata collection, implemented automated quality control protocols, and enabled significantly faster data analysis workflows that transformed our research capabilities. Key technical implementations included real-time data ingestion from laboratory instruments, automated data validation and cleaning processes, comprehensive experiment tracking with version control, and interactive visualization dashboards for rapid insight generation.
